Three encoding options are available, and each behaves differently:

  • UTF-8 — the current standard choice;
  • UTF-8 with BOM — the same bytes, but with a marker at the start. Without it, Excel displays Cyrillic characters as unreadable symbols, and some parsers treat the marker as part of the first word;
  • windows-1251 — a single-byte encoding still used for exports by 1C and legacy systems.

A Cyrillic letter in UTF-8 takes two bytes, so "so many characters" and "so many bytes" are different things. The size here is counted in bytes, and the cut is made on a character boundary: a 5,000-byte file remains valid text instead of breaking off in the middle of a letter.
