Remove Punctuation

Removes punctuation from text without gluing words together: hyphens inside words, apostrophes, and marks inside numbers stay in place.

What to keep

Words stay separate

If a mark sits between letters with no spaces around it, the tool puts a space in its place: "Hello, world" becomes "Hello world". Most similar tools return "Helloworld" instead, gluing the words together so you have to fix the text by hand.

Hyphens and apostrophes inside words

"E-store", "someone" and "O'Brien" stay intact: a hyphen or an apostrophe between letters counts as part of the word. A dash between words and a lone hyphen at an edge are removed.

Marks inside numbers

The comma in "1,5" → "1.5"? Use original examples carefully:

The comma in "1,5", the dot in "3.14", the colon in the time "12:30" and the hyphens in the phone number "123-45-67" are kept. Without this rule "1,5 million" would turn into "15 million", the number changes meaning, and in a long text that is hard to spot.

What counts as punctuation

Periods, commas, exclamation and question marks, colons with semicolons, all kinds of quotes and brackets, dashes, hyphens, ellipses, slashes, percent signs, ampersands and the at sign. Plus, equals, currency, number and degree signs stay in place, and so do emoji: they are not punctuation.
