Paragraph Counter

Paste text or upload a file, and the paragraph count appears right away. Below it you get a list of paragraphs with word and character counts, and the longest one is marked.

What counts as a paragraph

Programs count paragraphs differently, so different counters give different answers:

• blocks separated by an empty line — this is how text is laid out on websites and in emails;
• every line — this is how Word counts: each press of Enter starts a new paragraph.

In "Automatic" mode the page checks whether the text has empty lines between paragraphs, and tells you which method it used. A line with no letters or digits does not count as a paragraph.

Paragraph length

You can sort the list with the longest paragraph first and download it as a spreadsheet for Excel. Sentences, words, and characters are counted the same way as on the Sentence Counter page.
