Random MAC Generator

Generates random MAC addresses: locally administered ones or with a vendor prefix from the IEEE registry.

By default the addresses are locally administered: the second bit of the first byte is set to one, the lowest bit to zero. Such an address never matches a factory-assigned one and works for a virtual machine or a test bench. Its first byte ends in 2, 6, A or E.

If the first byte of a prefix is odd, the address is a group address, and a network card cannot accept it. The generator rejects such a prefix and explains why. There are no duplicates in the list, and if fewer variations are possible than you asked for, it says so directly.

Vendor prefix

You search for a company name in the IEEE registry in Latin letters: VMware, Huawei, Intel. Click a found block and the addresses will fall within its range. Small MA-M and MA-S blocks work too; their prefixes are longer than three bytes.

The registry lists 00:50:56 under VMware and 00:15:5D under Microsoft, while the block 08:00:27 used by VirtualBox belongs to PCS Systemtechnik.
