Are Cookies Enabled
Checks whether cookies are being saved in your browser.
Checking cookies, this takes a couple of seconds…
What was checked
The check runs on its own, you don't need to open anything. The answer appears within a couple of seconds, and below it you can see what exactly was tested.
Why asking the browser alone is not enough
Browsers have a navigator.cookieEnabled property, and most checks on the web look no further. The trouble is that it reports "enabled" even when cookies are in fact blocked for the current site: the property reflects the general setting, not whether a cookie will actually stick here and now.
So this page runs three checks in a row. First it writes its own cookie and reads it back. Then the server sets a cookie with a Set-Cookie header, and the page sends a second request to see whether it came back. That round trip is the real test, because it is how logging in to any site works. If the browser says one thing and the round trip shows another, the page will tell you so.
Third-party cookies are a separate question
A third-party cookie belongs not to the site in your address bar but to someone else's, embedded in the page: a payment frame, a map, a sign-in button for another account. You cannot test those from your own domain by definition, so the page embeds a frame from our second site.
The answer here comes in three variants, not two. Cookies may be fully enabled: then the embedded site recognizes you across other pages too. They may be blocked: then sign-in through someone else's account sometimes fails. Or they may be enabled but in a separate compartment per site: widgets keep working, while following you across sites with such a cookie is no longer possible.
How to enable cookies
Browser settings usually have two different switches, and people mix them up often: one blocks all cookies, the other only third-party ones. The first breaks signing in to sites, the second breaks payments in someone else's frame.
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
- Yandex Browser: Settings → Websites → Advanced site settings → Cookie files → Allow.
- Safari on Mac: Safari → Settings → Privacy.
- Firefox and Edge: the "Privacy & Protection" and "Privacy" settings sections respectively.
- Phone: on Android the setting lives in the browser itself; on iPhone it's in the system settings, under Safari.
After changing the setting, press "Check again" and the page will run the whole round trip from scratch.
