Is Website Down

Is the site down, or is it just you? Checks by layer, name, server, encryption, response, repeated several times, from our server in the US and from your browser.

We check layer by layer β€” does the name resolve, does the server answer, does encryption come up β€” and then reach out to the site several times in a row: that is how you spot a site that answers every other time. We look from our server in Moscow, through a checkpoint in the US, and from your own connection: if the site opens for us and not for you, the site is not the problem. The check takes about half a minute.

The check answers one question: is the site down for everyone, or does it fail to open only for you. The tool walks through the layers one by one: the domain name, then ports 80 and 443, then encryption, and finally the page's actual response. That way you see which step breaks, not just that the site is unreachable.

When the name does not resolve to an address, the check also looks at the state of the domain: whether it is registered and whether its renewal has not expired.

The page is requested four times with a pause of a few seconds between attempts. A single request cannot tell a downed site from a blinking one: if not every attempt gets an answer, the result shows that the site responds only intermittently.

The check runs from our server in Russia, from a point abroad, and directly from your browser. The browser check starts on its own, so there is nothing to enable.

A disagreement between these three results is itself the answer. If the site opens for you but stays silent for the servers, the cause is usually protection against automated requests on the site's side. Such a refusal is marked separately from a real outage.
